We are Unworthy Slaves

Luke 17:10 is one of my favorite Bible verses in the whole Bible! Jesus told His disciples, ”So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’ ”

Here Jesus tells us what kind of self-image we should have. We should see ourselves as slaves. Even after all the good, righteous things we’ve done as believers, we’ve only done that which is proper. We shouldn’t be proud of ourselves for simply fulfilling our responsibility. This sentiment from Jesus goes against the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality of many in our age.

We have the privilege of being a slave to our good King of Kings. We’re either slaves of sin or slaves of Christ. God has granted us the incredible privilege of being a slave in His kingdom, even though we are unworthy. Remember what the prodigal son said, “‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired men.”

We are worthy of condemnation because of our crimes against God. We are unworthy of His grace. We are worthy of damnation because of our sins. We are unworthy of His mercy. God loves unworthy, unlovable ones because God is love!!
